About

Who is c.bavota?

I started working with design a long time ago, when I still had aspirations of becoming a rock star. For some reason, I was in charge of putting together the artwork and jackets for my band’s (crappy) tapes. Of course, the tapes didn’t sell that great, but they introduced me to graphic design, even though I didn’t know what that was at the time.

Through the years I’ve worked on albums, magazines, posters, film fest programs and all kinds of other things that required some sort of design element. In 2002, I picked up a book on HTML so I could figure out how to get some designs online. As much as I loved design, programming started to take over my life. The web kept constantly changing and I did my best to keep up, learning xHTML, CSS, PHP, mySQL, JavaScript and ActionScript. I’m somewhat like a sponge when it comes to code and I love picking up new techniques and tricks. I started freelancing full time as a web developer back in 2007 and I wanted to create a place online where I could share everything I’ve learned over the years, as well as the new things I pick up day to day.

That is how bavotasan.com was born.

What is a bavotasan anyway?

I used to work as an assistant manager at a movie theater, and company policy forced employees to refer to me as Mister Bavota. I was not a big fan of that, so I made people call me Bavota San, which is just the Japanese way of saying Mister Bavota, though I’m not Japanese. But I do enjoy their movies.

Is c your real name?

I was born in Montreal, Quebec, and strange enough, it’s illegal to name your child with just a letter there. Weird, eh? So, of course, my name is not really c, it just starts with the letter c. I guess I refer to myself as c.bavota to have some sort of anonymity online or maybe because I think it’s kind of cool. But my real name is xxxxxxxxxxx.
